About Strange Bedfellows

Strange Bedfellows

“Strange Bedfellows,” is a nationally traveling exhibition and catalogue exploring collaborative practice in queer art making. The project is fiscally sponsored by the Queer Cultural Center and will be presented first at  Root Division,(San Francisco) as part of the National Queer Arts Festival in June of 2013. It will then travel to  the Samek Art Gallery at Bucknell University in Lewisburg Pennsylvania (Fall of 2013) and the College Art Association Conference, in Chicago (Feb 2014) as the sponsored exhibition of the Queer Caucus for the Arts.

As a curator, I am interested in collaborative art-making as a radical concept; redefining authorship and “queering” the singular artist/ author paradigm.  Collaborative practice raises questions of authorship, exploitation, community, and self-identity. To date, the project includes media such as film, photography, performance, sculpture, and painting.

Confirmed exhibiting artists to date:

  • Annie Sprinkle & Beth Stephens
  • Tina Takemoto & Angela Ellsworth
  • Chris Vargas & Greg Youmans
  • Sean Fader
  • Amos Mac & Juliana Huxtable LaDosha
  • E.G. Crichton
  • Adrienne Skye Roberts
  • Julie Sutherland
  • Alexander Hernandez
  • Sarah Hirneisen
  • Tara Mateik
  • billy ocallaghan
  • Bren Ahearn,  & Jesse Kahn
  • Angie Wilson & Amber Straus
  • Jordan Arseneault & PosterVIRUS

It is my hope that the exhibition will continue to travel and evolve, raising new questions about the role collaboration plays in queer life and artistic practice.   I would like to extend the reach and impact of these collaborative practices by including regionally specific collaborative projects in each new presentation.

The first iteration of this curatorial project will be presented in June of 2013 at Root Division in San Francisco as part of the National Queer Arts Festival.

This exhibition will include historical artifact culled from the San Francisco GLBT Historical Society and be focused on conversations between historical and contemporary collaborative practice.

Exhibition Dates: June 5th to 29th, 2013

Opening Reception: June 8th at Root Division  from  7 – 10 pm

Panel Discussion & Catalogue Release: June 19th at Root Division from 7- 9 pm

Upcoming stops for Strange Bedfellows:

Samek Gallery Bucknell University, Lewisburg PA, FALL 2013

College Art Association Conference, Chicago FEBRUARY 2014

The Bucknell and Chicago exhibitions will build upon the base of contemporary work commissioned and curated into the San Francisco show, and afford an opportunity to foster further collaboration between queer artists from city to city.

Updated dates will be posted as they become available.
